I have been immersed in the outdoors since I was a child, running around in the woods behind my Yorkshire home, building dens, climbing trees and getting into scrapes. With a mother and step-father both cub and scout leaders and a father and step-mother keen sailors, I was always out on one adventure or another. Whether it was visiting my Dad and his wife sailing around the Mediterranean during the school holidays, or camping in England with my Mum and her husband, I was always exploring and adventuring.
I started in the scout movement quite young and spent about 10 years between Cubs, Scouts and Ventures and by the end of my teens I had climbed Snowdonia in Wales, Ben Nevis in Scotland, and the famous Sca Fell and Helvellyn in the Lake District, thus accomplishing the highest peaks in each of the mainland UK countries. The national parks were my playgrounds, but as I moved on to university, and then later with work, my horizons broadened. I started rock climbing in my early 20’s, went skiing and snowboarding in the Austrian and French Alps, the Pyrenees and Australia. I have visited 5 of the 7 continents and had outdoor adventures in 4 of them. I have hiked the Annapurna range of Nepal and the famous Overland Trek in Tasmania, Kayaked Jervis Bay, white water rafted in Costa Rica, traversed Yosemite National Park, Sailed the Whitsundays, and generally rock climbed, abseiled and camped my way around the world.
Now I am settled in the wonderful Samford Valley, with a beautiful family of my own I feel it’s time to pass my experiences on. After being made redundant in June 2016 I decided to finally get my qualifications and follow this life-long passion, so I passed my Cert II and III in Outdoor Recreation, have undergone my Wilderness First Responder first aid training and obtained my Bluecard for working with children in Queensland.
So this brings us up to date as I launch my dream business Sun and Stars Bushcraft to pass on my knowledge and experiences in the most fun and safe way possible. I’ve noticed childhood get more and more risk averse and kids spending more and more time indoors and want to provide a safe space where not only they can get out and explore and learn, but also take the adults out who may have missed out on their own adventures when they were young too.
The core mission of this business is to encourage people of all ages to re-connect with the wild and with the adventurous side that lies within us all. To connect with nature, to explore not only the outdoors, but ourselves and what we are capable and to thrive as a result of doing so. I hope you’ll join me on the journey, and I’ll see you in the bush!
